Our History
Gibson has been a leading international shipbroker for more than 130 years. Our history began way back in 1870, when Charles Hunting Senior initiated Gibson Shipbrokers by investing in ship-owning companies and gifting two sailing ships to his son, Charles Samuel Hunting. Over the next 20 years, the company saw continuous growth, expanding its fleet to a dozen cargo steamships. Only a few year later, Edward Aisbett Gibson secured exclusive chartering rights for Hunting’s first oil tanker, marking the birth of E.A. Gibson and Company Limited.
The early 20th century brought challenges, with World War I reducing the Hunting Fleet to four ships. However, visionary leadership under Bill Green and the Hunting brothers revived the company. By the 1930s, E.A. Gibson emerged as a principal crude oil broker in Europe. Post-World War II, Richard Haig led the company’s diversification into dry cargo broking, tanker operations, and even aviation services.
In the subsequent decades, E.A. Gibson continued to evolve, embracing technological advancements, expanding globally, and achieving milestones such as the first-ever block fixture of a million tonnes.
The company’s journey includes significant developments like computerisation, restructuring and ISO 9001 registration. The late 20th century saw leadership transitions, international expansions, and the attainment of financial independence in 2015. In recent years, under Roger Harrison’s leadership, Gibson’s global presence expanded further, with new offices in Dubai and Athens, signaling a commitment to future growth and innovation.
